July 6, 2011-Travel and Reading Day

Hi all.  I hope that you will take advantage of the reading deal at Barnes and Nobles.  If you read 8 books, then you can turn in the names of those books and get a new free book.  My daughter got her book before we left Fayetteville.  She chose the book, Batboy by Mike Lupica, a #1 New York Times Bestselling author.  I wanted to read this book because, #1, my daughter said it was good and #2, it is set in a town with a major-league baseball team.  I was thinking of the Naturals in Springdale.

I travel to Aruba, an island in the Caribbean Sea today.  It is 14 miles north of Venezuela.  Read about Aruba online.  Ayo means goodbye i the Aruban language.

July 5, 2011-Finished

I hope your 4th was as fun as mine.  I am in sunny and hot Arizona and then traveling tomorrow to sunny, hot, and windy Aruba.  I finished Jerry Spinelli's Fourth Grade Rats.  This definitely will be a 4th grade book club in the fall and maybe a third grade one in the spring.  It is a story of growing up and acting a certain way due to your class at school.  The main character, Suds, finds out a lot about himself at the beginning of 4th grade.

Reading in Nashville, TN

Hi all,
I am currently in my hotel room blogging about reading in Nashville, TN.  Mrs. Herring and I are at a conference called, "The Model School's Conference".  Literacy is such a huge piece.  I started a new book called, Camden Summer.  The book is about a woman in the early 1900's who moves back to her hometown in Maine.  I really enjoy reading on a plane.  Where do you like to read?

The other book that I brought with me to read is Jerry Spinelli's book Fourth Grade Rat.  I asked my daughter to read it first to see if she thought it would be a good book for a lunch book club book for 4th graders next year.  She thought it would be a great book after reading.  So I am going to read the book while in Nashville.

June 23, 2011

Just finished Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key by Jack GantosJoey ended up at a special school where the doctor worked with his Joey and his mom to help him with focus issues.  He finally got to return to school and was so excited because he felt that he was a new kid.  You will have to read the book to find out how the return went!!!

I hope all of you are having a restful summer and I hope you will read, read, read!!!!  It's the only way for you to become a good reader.  I also hope that you will visit the public library.  There are many wonderful reading and writing events going on there this summer.  My daughter finished her second card of 300 minutes so off the to the library we will go.  I will probably be there around 3:00-4:00.  Hope to see you there.

What a beautiful day!

Hi all, I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather.  What a great present!!  I am almost finished with Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key.  I hope Joey gets better because he is now at a special school because of an accident while running with scissors. He cut the tip of a gal's nose.   This book really shows what it is like when kids struggle to stay focused and calm.

My daughter Sydney turned in her first 300 minutes at the Public Library.  She got two free doughnuts at Rick's Bakery.  We went there today and she also picked out her dad's birthday cake-a guy on a sandy beach surrounded by palm trees.  We will be going to Aruba later in the summer.

See if you can find out facts about Aruba.  You will need to do some nonfiction reading!!!!

Public Library

Headed to the Public Library.  My daughter has read her first 300 minutes.  She will turn it in and get the next card.  Are you involved and have you turned in your cards yet that tell how many minutes you have read?

June 13-19

Hope your summer is progressing nicely and you are curled up with a great book.  I am still reading Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key.  It was a slow start but I am getting into the main character's frustration with trying to do the right thing, but his attention and overabundance of energy seem to keep him in trouble.  I find myself not wanting to put it down.
Read USA Weekend insert from today's paper and famous author James Patterson has a website to encourage students to read during the summer months.  It is ReadKiddoRead.com and he makes recommendations of book titles for kids.
